About Frances

Frances was born in Brighton in 1973 and grew up in a series of “small, sinister villages”, moving at the age of seven to a huge old house on a hilltop in Kent that “wuthered when the wind blew”. She always made up stories and especially liked dark tales. Frances studied English at Oxford University, then worked for a software company, writing short stories for adults in her spare time, until a friend, children’s author Rhiannon Lassiter, persuaded her to try writing for children. When her story Fly By Night was published, it received rave reviews and several prizes, allowing Frances to become a full-time author. Now on her sixth book, Frances is rarely seen without a black hat which, she says, feels like part of her head, and may contain her personality.
